With more of us working at home, I am getting more queries regarding poor Wi-Fi speeds and coverage. With Wi-Fi there is no simple answer however I hope the following tips can help you out.

1. If you have an option, ensure that your modem is located as centrally as possible. This might not always be possible depending on the wiring in your property.
2. If your modem has antennas, ensure that they are pointing upright, or at a slight angle. The signal from the antenna travels in a circle around the antenna, so in most single-story homes it's best to have them upright. If your house has floors or tiers, angles may help better. Also ensure that the antennas are screwed in tightly (but not too tight that you break them!)
3. Try a Wi-Fi extender or mesh system. Whilst these can be a good solution, they can sometimes be unreliable or problematic. You also need to ensure that wherever the extender is plugged into receives a good and reliable Wi-Fi signal.
4. You could try a better router, if you are still using your ISP-supplied router. Whilst the "free" or "included" router that are being sent nowadays are much better than they were in the past, they are still generally on the lower-end. However, connecting a 2nd router to your existing router does need some specific configuration and this is not always easy to do.
5. The best option for improving your Wi-Fi is to install additional routers in alternate rooms via ethernet. But I've left the best 'til last because it's also the most difficult and most expensive. You would need to have an ACMA-registered cabler install the additional sockets, and then would need the additional modems configured appropriately.

Speed issues and dropout issues can be difficult to troubleshoot, and they could be due to an issue on your end or an issue on your ISP end. Ensure that you are on an appropriate plan for your needs (light users will be able to suffice on 12-25mbps NBN plans but a larger family or heavier user may need a 50-100mbps plan if available) and that there are no issues on the ISP side. If you have a line fault, no amount of router is going to solve your problem!
